Make Some Noise

Podcast microphone in front of a blue and black background. Blog title reads, "Make Some Noise."

Historical Records is a new podcast that I’ve been listening to lately. Its’ first season just wrapped up, and I figured I’d share it here. It’s a family podcast that explores lesser-recognized historical figures who deserve to be celebrated. The only person featured that I had ever heard of was Bill Russell. But the show has highlighted people who have contributed to desegregation, disability rights, health advocacy, labor rights…

The hook of the show is that it always ends with a brand-new hip-hop song about the person in question.

I write this blog every week with the intention of sharing things that I care about that I think is worth sharing. Learning about the people who helped bring us to where we are, and the ways we can use their memory to help bring us further is something that I want to share.

I don’t think there’s more I need to say about it, but I want to recommend listening to at least one of these things, if for no other reason that I like it.

If you’re curious and want a taste, I would recommend listening to one of the episodes labeled, “Just the Songs.” The Kati Kariko and Mary Golda Ross songs are a great way to start. My favorite song in general, though, is Mitsuye Endo.

We need to make sure we remember our history, not just the history we’re told we should. Listen along and remember the importance of voices who stood for justice and against oppression. The past is prologue. Let’s not forget.

Peace,

Rev. Jeff Fox-Kline
